Strings

Time: Thursday 6:15 – 8:30PM | Old Arts, Room 152

Apollo Strings is proud to be the original Apollo ensemble, and would like for the other ensembles to recognise us as their superior. Unfortunately this has yet to happen. We rehearse on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30, on Level 2 of the Union House, under the wise and esteemed guidance of conductor Angela McStephen, who is definitely not the one writing this bio. Our repertoire is a mix of classical, film scores, and arrangements of songs. We welcome all new members (BYO instrument), but it helps a lot if you can read sheet music.

The string orchestra has been active since the inception of Apollo and it has, in the recent past, performed Summer and Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart.

Strings Ensemble: 2018 POPS Concert

History
The Apollo Orchestra has enjoyed great success under the guidance of four fantastic conductors.
One of the founding ensembles of Apollo Health Music Society, the String Orchestra began playing in 2002, playing under the guidance of co-conductors Peter Sullivan and Jules Czesko. While completing his Masters degree in Conducting and Composition, Peter also found time to compose the four-movement Apollo Suite especially for the Apollo String Orchestra, which premiered in our 2002 Debut Concert.

In 2003, Pat Miller took over the reins, and our repertoire took a more traditional and romantic course: Haydn, Suk, Debussy, Mascagni. This culminated in the String Orchestra playing its maiden solo Concert by Candlelight, in the gorgeous Chapel of Trinity College of the University of Melbourne, featuring soloists and quartets in addition to the main ensemble.

Through 2004/2005, Burhan Guner led the String Orchestra while completing his Master of Music Degree with the Department of Music at the University of Melbourne, under the tutelage of John Hopkins.

From 2005 to 2011, Katharine Parton, was also a student of the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where she is completing her PhD in Orchestral Musician Cognition and Interaction through the Faculty of Arts. In 2007 the string orchestra collaborated with Fusion Band, performing Anthony Williams’ composition, Apollo’s Theme. Following this, we expanded to form a chamber orchestra with wind and brass, which has variously performed Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, and Rossini’s Barber of Seville overture, amongst other pieces.
