Fusion: 2018 POPS Concert
From founding member William Shi:
In 2007, resident Guitar Hero Min Shik Kim said to me ‘Hey dude, what’s a Guitar Hero gotta do to get involved in music and Apollo and what not?’ It kinda bugged me that I couldn’t give him a better answer than ‘Ummm…join the String Orchestra?’.
So a Topclass message later, the brand new Apollo Fusion band was formed. Fittingly, the group played an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, rock and blues fused together in a 15 piece band. The band was made up of a woodwind and brass section coupled with two electric guitars, bass, piano, drums and four vocalists all plugged into 5 active speakers and amplifiers.
Now, how to describe what Fusion plays? I’ve heard every term around – including swunk. Basically, throw in some jazz, swing, pop, with a Jamie-Oliver-pinch of funk, and you may come close. The group has played material by the Cat Empire, John Meyer, the Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan and No Doubt, as well as original compositions and arrangements by members in the past.
While Apollo have always had non-classical ensembles, this is undoubtedly the most unique and diverse group to have emerged since the Alex Gin Trio (which played everything from Mozart to Cypress Hill to Marilyn Manson. I mean, seriously, how can you complete with that?!). Never before have musicians from such a wide range of disciplines been able to have a funklicious time jamming together under one roof!
